At Upottery Primary, we believe every child has the potential to become a confident, fluent reader and writer. To support this journey, we teach reading using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a comprehensive and systematic phonics programme designed to build strong foundations in literacy.
We view reading as a fundamental life skill, which is why we place a strong emphasis on language development. We understand that speaking and listening are key to mastering reading and writing across all subjects.
By the time our pupils leave Upottery Primary, they will have developed the ability to read confidently, with comprehension and enjoyment. They’ll be well-equipped to tackle new and challenging vocabulary and will see themselves as readers, not just for academic purposes, but for pleasure and lifelong learning.
Supporting Reading at Home
While your child will receive structured reading lessons at school, continuing their reading practice at home is incredibly beneficial to their overall progress. Your involvement can make a tremendous difference in their reading journey.
Your child may have two types of reading books:
Reading Practice Book
This book is specifically matched to your child’s current reading ability. If they are reading it with ease, don’t worry—it’s important that they build fluency and confidence. Listen to them read aloud, offering lots of praise and encouragement. If they struggle with a word, simply read it to them, and afterward, take time to discuss the story or content together.
Reading for Pleasure Book
To nurture your child's love for reading, it’s important to introduce them to the joys of reading for pleasure. The sharing book is designed for you to explore together. You can read it to your child, share the experience, and make it interactive. Talk about the illustrations, make predictions about what might happen next, or use expressive voices for the characters. If it’s a non-fiction book, explore the facts and enjoy learning new things together. The key is to make reading fun and engaging!
